Is the air inside your home dirtier than outside?
Often, yes. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency reports that the air inside homes and other buildings can be more seriously polluted than the outdoor air in even the largest and most industrialized cities. In EPA exposure studies, about a dozen common organic pollutants measured 2 to 5 times higher inside homes than outside. And one of the EPA's core strategies for fixing it is simple: bring more outdoor air indoors.

Most homes are built tight to save energy, which also means the air inside gets reused, over and over, along with everything it carries. What builds up in indoor air?
The EPA's guide names the usual suspects, and most of them come from ordinary living, not from anything going wrong:
- Volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including formaldehyde off-gassing from pressed-wood furniture, cabinetry, and finishes.
- Combustion byproducts like carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide from gas stoves and appliances.
- Household chemicals from cleaning products, paints, and pesticides.
- Biological contaminants: mold spores, dust mites, dander.
- Radon in some regions, seeping from the ground into lower levels.
- Carbon dioxide from breathing, which climbs overnight in closed bedrooms.

What does the research actually show?
Ventilation research is not fringe science. A multidisciplinary review published in the journal Indoor Air examined 27 peer-reviewed studies and found a consistent pattern across different populations and study designs: higher ventilation rates in homes, offices, and schools were associated with better health outcomes.

Ventilation also affects how well you think. In a controlled Harvard study of office workers, participants scored 61 to 101 percent higher on cognitive tests when working under enhanced-ventilation conditions, and higher carbon dioxide levels alone were associated with measurably lower scores. The study was conducted in an office setting, but the mechanism it measured, lower CO2 and fewer airborne compounds through better ventilation, is exactly what ventilating a home changes.

The finding closest to home is about sleep. In field experiments published in Indoor Air, researchers tracked sleepers in bedrooms with different ventilation levels. When bedroom air was fresher (lower CO2), objectively measured sleep quality improved, and so did next-day reported sleepiness, ability to concentrate, and performance on a logical-thinking test. Your bedroom's air overnight is the air you spend a third of your life breathing.

How do you flush it out?
The EPA's answer is ventilation: increasing the amount of outdoor air coming indoors. Opening a window ventilates one room slowly. A whole house fan does it at scale: it pulls fresh outdoor air in through open windows and exhausts the stale indoor air out through the attic, exchanging the entire air volume of your home in minutes. The U.S. Department of Energy calls ventilation "the least expensive and most energy-efficient way to cool buildings."
