Frequently Asked Questions

The general rule is 2 CFM per square foot of living space for single-story homes, and 2.5 CFM per square foot for two-story homes (hot air rises and needs more force to move it). Our configurator calculates this automatically — just enter your square footage and number of stories. You can also read the detailed Sizing Guide for the full explanation.
Yes — most homeowners with basic DIY experience install our fans in 2–4 hours. You'll need attic access, a jigsaw or reciprocating saw, and basic electrical skills (connecting to an existing circuit). We provide detailed written and video installation guides with every purchase. If you're not comfortable with attic work or electrical connections, we recommend hiring a licensed electrician. Installation cost varies widely from region to region, so we'd suggest getting a quote from a local pro.
Both are assembled in our California facility and independently CEC-certified. Centric Air uses German-engineered motor technology for quieter operation and carries a 15-year warranty. QA Deluxe uses proven American-engineered motors and carries a 10-year warranty at a significantly lower price point. See our full side-by-side comparison for detailed specs.
ECM (Electronically Commutated Motor) motors run far more efficiently at low and medium speeds and allow continuously variable speed control. The upgrade adds $148 on the QA Deluxe and $300 on the Centric Air. If you run the fan on low for overnight cooling, it typically pays for itself in about 2 to 4 years. Read our full ECM vs Standard guide with break-even calculations by climate zone.
As a rule of thumb, you need 1 square foot of net free area (NFA) in your attic vents for every 750 CFM of fan airflow. For a 3,000 CFM fan, that's 4 sq ft of NFA. Most homes already have adequate ventilation — check your soffit, ridge, and gable vents. If you're undersized, adding a gable vent is a simple solution. Running a fan with inadequate ventilation causes back pressure, noise, and reduced performance.
Whole house fans work best in dry climates where summer nights cool to 65–70°F or below. They're ideal for California, the Pacific Northwest, the Mountain West, and most of the Southwest. They're moderately effective in the Midwest and Northeast, and less effective in the humid Southeast where nights stay hot and muggy. Check our climate guide for a region-by-region breakdown.
The R-5 damper (included standard) is fine for mild climates where winters stay above 40°F. The R-13 Cold Climate Motorized Damper is recommended for colder climates (regularly below 40°F): it has more than 2.5× the insulation of the R-5, plus a motorized seal and a perimeter air-sealing gasket. Read our Damper Guide for the full climate-by-climate recommendation.
Centric Air fans run about 49 dBA at full speed, roughly a quiet conversation or a refrigerator hum. QA Deluxe fans are about 51 dBA. Both are far quieter than a window A/C unit, and both ECM models are quieter still at lower speeds.
Yes — the fan creates negative pressure in your home and needs an air path in to be effective. Open at least 2–3 windows, ideally on different sides of the house for cross-ventilation. More open area = better airflow. Running the fan without open windows is not harmful but is ineffective and will not cool your home. Opening windows in rooms you want to cool fastest works best.
